Moxibustion (MOXA) comes in several forms. It’s made up of special herbs, some are compressed into a long stick, or is loose which looks like a cotton ball, or into tiny sticks which can stick onto the body. The long stick is lit and is gradually moved above the particular area needing treatment. The loose form can be rolled into a small cone shape which can be placed onto the body with a wax type substance or can be rolled into a ball and put onto the needle. The small tiny stick is placed directly on the body. Again, all types are lit.
Moxibustion is applied during a treatment for particular conditions and not necessarily all year round. Some practitioners use it depending on clinic ventilation. There is smokeless moxa which is also use.
